Romeo & Juliet

Director's Notes

Welcome to our production of the timeless and classic tale of Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare. We are taking another stab at Shakespeare! This star-crossed tale has been a part of our popular culture, often referenced in music, television shows, and movies.

We are very excited to offer you our rendition of Romeo & Juliet with the inspiration of one of my favorite bands, The 1975. If you have been with us for the last few years, we produced Macbeth two years ago with a concept design and inspiration using the tragic artist Kanye West. It is my belief that one of the most important ways to tell a Shakespearean tale is to find a way to rejuvenate it for its audiences.

I chose the band The 1975 for their synth pop tonality and visual aesthetics that comes from their concerts and merchandise. The band sings songs of forlorn love endeavors, pressures of the limelight and often a fear of succumbing to bad vices and poor habits. Their music presents many themes and motifs that we borrowed to support our telling of this tragedy.
