PROJECT SUMMARY

After the summer of 2020, and after the very public, very loud, and the very painful outcry for black voices in all spaces, I assessed myself. Sitting in Santa Clarita, desperate to flee back to a place I had once called home, I assessed myself as to where I now fit in our macroscopic cosmos of social justice and suicide, for I knew the black body was tired and was all too familiar with George Floyd’s anguish as he passed away, lifeless, on our cellphones...or our laptops...and of course our TVs.

And when asked about a thesis in which I would leave this sort of small mark, I thought about black people, and black pain, but also of black excellence and black perseverance but most importantly, black joy.

It was a collaboration on every account.

Beyoncé’s Lemonade was no longer just an album but an anthology, a call, a spell cast, to the black women and creatives before her, to her team to her network, and as the internet picked apart their best samples of it all, a select group of minds came together and created a Syllabus in which they discovered, dissected, and digested the context of one would need to understand the work Lemonade on a more intersectional level.

And so, for me, and as my love letter to blackness and my first attempt to spread joy, is to create a syllabus space where we not only dissect portions of the New York Times Bestseller Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good by adrienne maree brown, but that we also create a digital, self-lead and collective course space to explore the major themes of the book in various lessons. It is where we will also continue our mission to support and encourage book clubs to form out of their own natural curiosities, as well as push for and encourage the support of black businesses and black joy.
